HONEY BEES

Did you know:

      • A bee makes 1/12th teaspoon of honey in her lifetime.

      • Honeybees travel one and a half times around the earth to collect the nectar to make a pound of honey.

      • Honey never spoils.

      • Honeybees are the only insects that produce a food we eat.

      • A queen bee can lay up to 2,000 eggs in one day.

      • A honeybee will visit 50 to 100 flowers on a single trip.

      • One hive can have 60 to 80,000 bees in the summer.

Interested in learning about beekeeping and the lives of honey bees?

It’s possible, with our Adopt a Hive Program, for New Pond Farm Members.

In this unique hands-on program, you will suit up and work alongside our passionate beekeeper and educator, Ann Murray. Ann is brimming with knowledge about these essential and extraordinary pollinators, and soon you will be too!

Between April and October, you and Ann will coordinate several monthly visits so you can see firsthand how your hive progresses through the growing season. You will observe the behaviors and roles of workers, drones, and possibly the queen, and you will be amazed at the engineering feats and endless productivity taking place in this super-organism known as the honey bee colony.

This will be a hands-on learning experience that you will never forget! All beekeeping suits and equipment will be loaned to you during each visit. This special program is just for Members of New Pond Farm Education Center and costs $400. If you are interested, please write to info@newpondfarm.org
